N64 Heatsink

Post by sniper_spike »

Greets, I'm Spike :D

I stumbled upon this site from a link on a perticular EMU forum (emutalk).
After looking at Ben's creations and the other wonderful N64 portables on this forum, I decided to go out to my local Chapters and buy the book. Luckily, it had 2 of the books left as I had read on the website. I'm in the proccess of reading it now aswell as other N64 guides scattered across this forum.

After reading that i had to replace the heatsink on the N64 ( http://daguuy.esmartguy.com/how-2.html ), I quickly went and looked for a suitable one for this project. And after almost 2 whole minutes of searching!!!!111shiftONEeleven. I found this rather cheap Cooler Master Chipset HSF.

So I ask you oh N64 hacking gurus , would it do?

I was also looking for a thermal adhesive for it, and thought that Artic Silver might have one. And they did.
http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silv ... hesive.htm

So then great, I have my adhesive. Or do I?
Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive IS NOT intended to be used between a CPU and the CPU heatsink.
On a CPU, only use. Arctic Silver Thermal Compound
And if I understand correctly, I will be applying this on the N64 CPU will i not be? So should i go with the Artic Silver Thermal Compound 5 instead or Artic Silver Ceremique instead of the thermal adhesive?

Thanks in advance.

it will work if you have a 12V power supply.

if you like to play long enough for heat to be an issue, you'll need a small fan. since you'll use a 7.2v-9v battery and computer fans use 12v, the fan will spin a bit slower and more quietly but still keep it cool enough.

Pretty pointless, just use a fanless design, even some penny's would work.

i think the "NOT for use on CPUs" thing is more directed at people with PC's. it is sometimes useful to remove the heatsink, and this glue is totally permanent. most cpu heatsinks are moutned to the motherboard, and glue is unnessecary. since there is no real good way to hold a N64 heatsink down without glue, well... you gotta glue it.

but no, it wont actauly hurt your cpu or anything. they just dont want stupid people permanently gluing stuff inside their compteur together.

i should really update my guide a bit. you don't really need a fan unless you have very small heatsinks. i'll make the thermal adhesive part more helpful when i get that far myself so i can back it up with some experience

Darn! I just realised that your system is called the GameBoy 64. That was my idea! I had thought it was pure genius at the time.

Anyways, thanks for the help, and I'll be looking forward to the updated guide.

Me, I'm gonna try some CPU sink pads from digi-key. They're supposed to just stick onto the chip and sink and hold it there. that artric silcer stuff would work too (be sure NOT to get any on pins though, or you'll short something). It's a bit too pricey for my budget though. And if you want some cheap, air cooled sinks, get some TO-220 heatsinks from radioshack. Stick 2 on each chip. Should work great, I have yet to find out.

As for names, I have two in mind for my next one. N64 OnDaGo, or, N64CP (cargo pocket  )

I think I'll get the sinks pads instead now. And for the heatsinks, do you mean #276-1368 or #276-1363?
