if I have a switch do I have to solder the negative wire and the positive wire to it or just wire

Just splice the switch into the middle of a circuit.

What kind of switch? SPST, DPST, DPDT?

if you have DPDT switch then both would be best. if not, positive

No you don't have to hook up - and + to the switch. Just hook up the positive end of the power source to one leg of the switch, and the other leg of the switch to the cathode leg of the LED. Then connect the anode and the ground together.

Ground (on your project) is probably the outside metal on the edge of the board.

That's backwards and may burn out the LED - definitely won't make it light. LED anode goes to positive, cathode to negative (or "ground"). Don't forget you need a resistor in there somewhere too, unless you bought one of those special LEDs with the resistor built-in.

Whoops, yeah, A.J.'s right, but I figured he already knew about the resistor, and this topic hasn't been posted in for a while before you re-answered the question.
