Its easier to use the smaller PSone because it uses only one voltage which is easier to get. Also, yes it is worth making a portable even though it might take you a lot of time and investment the satisfaction of making one (not to mention playing it
) is awesome. Plus you can brag to your friends on how smart you are

Welcome!
Yes, it's 111% worth it to build a portable. You get the satisfaction of building something great (or "leet" or "1337", depending on where on the web you come from.
), a great learning experience in hobby electronics, and of course a kick*** game system which sends the GBA cryin' back home to its mama. (Who could argue with a 3", 4" or even 5" backlit screen with 3D graphics? NOT ME!)
Unfortunately the Playstation you have won't cut it. The board is too big and powering it is a bit tricky. You want the PSone, the smaller Playstation they made after 2000, because of its small size (just a bit bigger than some CD Walkmans. [Walkmen?]) and how simple it is to power. (7.2v RC battery will do the trick.)
Well, anyways, don't be afraid to ask questions, but remember to search first. Chances are that your question has been answered before.

it depends on the parts your going to use.
example list:
PSone: $20-$40
PSone screen: $20-$50
Intec/hipgear screen: $20-$30
Batteries: $3-???? (really depends on which ones you use. from AA's to portable DVD batteries)
Extra stuff (tact switches, LEDs, bread board... etc) $10-$23
right before i fried my PSone i was about 90% complete and 3 1/2 weeks into the project.
