Power Woes

Post by bicostp »

I know I haven't posted anything about the PSonep I'm trying to build, and to tell the truth I haven't done much at all. I'm trying to figure everything out (power, layout) before I tear everything apart, so I know what I need to do.

Well I'm having trouble with power. The 3000mah RC batery at RadioShack has no charger, and I don't have a compatible charger. So I was thinking I could use some NiMH AA-size revchargeables, or Rayovac Rechargeable Alkalines? I think they're about 1800mah, but I'm not sure.

Or, I have a dysfunctional laptop with a 10.8v 4500mAh Li-ion battery back. I bet I could use that, but I'd need to build/find a 7808 regulator to knock the power back down to the 8v that the PSone can safely handle.

At any rate, I need to know the power draw of both the PSone motherboard and the Intec screen in milliamp/hours, or at least how to test power draw with a multimeter.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. :) Thanks!

That's not any stronger than a variable power brick that I already have.

I didn't think I could use it because the charger isn't strong enough. Or is the cahrger's mah rating not matter? Only the voltage?

I would use this battery, but I'm not sure weather this adapter would charge it properly.

Sorry but I'm kind of confused.

(oh and I'd rather not buy anything online.)

well, i bought that battery from radioshack, but as you said, they dont sell the charger alone... so I am buying that charger I linked you to today, I will give you a report once I get it if it works, if not, oh well. Also, I went to radioshack yesterday because I needed a charger, and the guy was an idiot, he said "well, why dont you buy this charger and battery, then its like your getting a free battery" and im thinking, how stupid are you? I have to pay an extra 20 dollars for the battery, so its not free.... oh well... Good luck finding a charger.

Well I figured out that I can use the laptop battery. I think 4500mah should last a while, and paper clips make great contacts for it.

The thing is that it's 11 volts. Now this will run the Intec screen perfectly, but I need to knock it down to 8 volts for the PSone. I have a few 7805s lying around, but no 7808s, and I can't find any ANYWHERE!!! :x Didn't someone post a way to use resistors to make a 7805 put out 8 volts? If so, I can't find it. Either that, or how do I use those variable regulators?

Any help is appreciated; once I get this figured out I'm pretty much set to start laying things out.

Sorry about the double post, but if I just edited I wouldn't call attention to this thread again. ;)

I have successfully powered my Intec screen off of my laptop battery. I really, REALLY want to use it because of it's massive capacity (4500mah) and because it was free. ;) Now all I need to do is run the PSone off of it and it's showtime!

I'm looking to use a car power adapter, because they are more readily avalible than 7808 regulators in my area. I checked online and Gamestyop doesn't have any. So I went to Radioshack.com and looked through their selection. There's a 9v and a 6v version of the DC power adaptor. There is a variable one, but I'm not sure how big it would be inside or if that would be overkill or something.

So I guess my qustions are:

1. Would the PSone even boot on 6v?
2. If I bought the 9v version what resistors would be neded to drop it down to 7.5v?
3. <s>Where's that diagram of how to use resistors to make the 7805 put out 8 volts?</s> Nevermind that question, I found it.
4. Would a variable regulator be a better idea?

I'm nearly begging for advice here, because powering the PSone is the only thing keeping me from starting! :D
