Making the xbox DVD drive smaller.... why not?

So first of I'm new blah blah this is my first post blah blah (insert other stuff you don't care to hear)

On to the subject.

Now we are all hackers or some of you are aspiring hackers and the whole point of being a hacker is to push things to the limit. I have heard a lot of people say that Ben making the xbox into a laptop is impossible and that almost no one can do it. I think right off the bat that's a load of BS. Even Ben says it's really not that hard. I also think that we can push the laptop even further, in fact I know we can.

The one thing that is holding the case back of every xbox portable/laptop I have seen from being small enough to look good is the damn dvd drive. COME ON GUYS WE CAN MAKE IT SMALLER! If we can cut down the dvd drive by a 1/2 inch in height it will make the laptop look so much better!

I'm sure most of you have seen RDC's Slot loading DVD drive.

He mashed up the components of a Mac slot loader to carry the heart of the xbox dvd drive and in its construction there was a working model no bigger than a laptop drive. As a matter of fact, on that note, why not make a slot loader on the xbox laptop? Why has no one done this yet is my question. We have RDC's project documented and we know how he did it. Maybe I'm just dreaming but I for sure think it would be amazing to see.

Why have we not done it?

1. Because nobody cares enough about the original xbox anymore to pay someone for the time to make it, and the people who CAN make it do not want one for themselves.

2. Nobody said it could not be done, people HAVE made xbox laptops.

3. Slimming the DVD drive does nothing, most people lay it alongside the motherboard, and the case has to be pretty large to fit a screen anyways.

3. If you really want the space savings, why mess with a disc drive when you can use a 2.5" laptop drive?

4. Not to sound mean, but until you have actually contributed, I am not sure if you count as part of the "we" you keep speaking of. Right now, you are just pointing out something WE could do, but I do not think you bring any new skills to the table.

Palmer, I think he means XBox 360, not original XBox.

In that case, a lot of my points still stand. The DVD drive is not the reason for the thickness, slimming it would do little to make one slimmer. Airflow is a huge factor here, the last few 360 laptops made by members here had problems with overheating, even with fairly large cases. You can simply not slim the case down anymore without overheating the 360.

Oh, and the only reason it is "impossible" is the case. Taking a 360 out of the case, and wiring it to an LCD moniter is not hard, it IS very easy. But without access to a full fledged CNC shop, hundreds of dollars, and tens of hours devoted to the case, all you have is a bunch of parts out on your workshop table.

2. point out that the new person has done nothing (that any of us know about) that would prepare them to do what they want to.

3. give useful advice.
