Super Famicom Portable (while in Japan)

Post by makuraken »

Alright, aside from my topic in Pocket TV Hacking, I am starting a new one here for two purposes. One to show progress on my first ever portable (first ever opening a game system too) and Two to have something open for questions that I am unable to find answers on.
First things first, here is the page with the pictures of my board that i just got, next to the board is the pile of crap that I took off of it and/or broke off in order to open the darned thing.
Enjoy (BTW, the cartirdge slot comes off, so all I need to do is extend the connections a little if I want to have the carts slide in a different way).
Enjoy this progress.

LOL I wonder why? But this is my first portable tryout so I was surprised to see this be that small. The case I had in mind may be of no use and I may have to think up a more simple one now...
I had a scare as I thought that I blew a fuse about 10min ago. Turns out the battery that I was using was dead because it draws power from the wall perfectly.
Also, I have been having a hard time finding this info but... the 7805 reg on this thing generates heat, so a IDO (or something like that) would not make much of a difference right? Also, Where on the board would I place the battery terminal wires (the wires that go FROM the battery to the board)? And finally, the battery thingy I am using has three wires; blue, red, and black. I assume that red it positive and black is the neg. But what the crap is blue? I took the battery holder from a camcorder (the same one I WAS going to use the LCD from but found out otherwise). Well, its 11:00PM here and I need my sleep for school tomorrow, so I will cut this off here. Thanks again

I have to clearify the thing of the Super famicom/NES they are essentally the same design. The secuity device that Nintendo put in this one was plastic brackets to prevent the Japanese games from being playable on the SNES.

The LDO you contemplated to replace the 7805 with is a little different. With that you can use a 6v battery and have more run time as less of the power is being wasted as burnt off heat. The only other option you can go with to make it power efficent is a dc-dc converter.

As for the battery, the only thing I can think the blue wire might be for is either a second ground or shield. I'm not sure, post a pic and other members might be able to help you more.

Is what legalized in Japan?
Also, when I get home I will post more pics up on the website I have listed above, I will make another post when that happens. One more thing, I need a screen and I am not too fond of using a PSone LCD just yet, I am trying to think of a way to have one screen be a variable in many portables. In other words, I will build many portables but with one screen. You just click and side the screen in and out of the portable. Same with the battery case. This is my idea, what do you think?

Nice standardized idea.

The way you can have the screen work with multiple systems is have the output moded so its like a tvs rca inputs. the battery is just about you using the same connector (and/or battery style) and build into the cases a way to hold the batteries.

Tell me what you think about the variable system idea and if you know what that blue wire is, please tell me. Thanks and here ya go!

Blue wire apparently means nothing. I tested the black and red on the board (after removing the crappy DC adapter) and the system works wonderfully. As such, not more worrys about the blue wire I may just hack it off or something.
Now all I need is to build the case and get a screen and I am done!
Progress reports will still be listed.

Just a thought. Is the blue wire part of the recharging circuit of the camcorder?

That could very well be it. However, I do not feel like setting up the circuits in my systems to recharge the battery (however cool that may be, I am just unsure as to how without adding a whole adapter which would make more weight).
Either way, thanks for that input.

Just a quick question, what should I make the case out of? I may be able to make a vacuume form table but I dont have plastic, a mold, or know how to use the table after I built it.
So then, what other options are there (I will be browsing more topics, so no response to this broad a question is needed)?
My original thought was to take a clean Super Famicom case and replace the board with this one (because it is now modded) and just slide parts in such as a controller and screen. But who knows...
Well, off to view case topics!

sounds good, if you visit http://doomportables.org/ and go to the systems->cases section you'll see many of the things people have made cases out of :)

Case

Post by makuraken »

I think I figured out what to make the case out of. Like in one post a guy found a cutting board would work. So I thought that I could just take a lot of cutting boards (plastic PVC or something, NOT wood) and probably cut it up into 3 or 4 parts and just drill in screws (slowly). That way it is cheap and very durable. Then add the tech and stuff, then paint (or the other way around?) So tell me what you think about them apples?
