Nomad questions

If you do the LED mod to a nomad, how long would the batteries last? How about if you replaced the whole screen with a pocket TV?

Well from what I've heard the Nomad had a battery life of 2 hours. Keeping in mind that is with alkaline batterys (not good form high draw electonics). I would like to say do the LED mod but replacing the screen would be far better as you the have an active matrix display that wont be blury.

Also the Noman inputs RGB to the screen, so the pocket tv/lcd needs to accept RGB.

Yeah I think I will use a pocket TV. Although I don't know if I'd be able to cram its guts into the nomad case. I'll try anyway, though.

Also the Nomad's screen is 3".

Good luck, and if you cant get the screen competely into the case, mod the case then.

yeah, the nomad's battery life sucks with alkalines. I've tried using rechargeable AA's (NiMh) and it would only turn on for a second or so. I think it's because NiMh AAs are only 1.2v. Does anyone know what the nomad uses for power, like a 7805 regulator? if so I could probably replace it with an ldo regulator and also do an led mod. I love my nomad but I hate it's low battery life (and the broken pixels.....)

As the Nomad is nothing more then a genesis with a screen, I'd say it deffently has a 7805 regulator. The problem with the Nomads battery life is probably the same thing the Genesis have, they need a strong input (example; the v.2 requires 10v from the ac adapter), so an LDO should fix the problem and replacing the screen with an LED moded tv should bring the life to at the very least an extra hour.

I'm not gonna crack opne my Nomad anytime soon, though. but it's a mod I definetly want to do at some point, 'cause I love the Nomad and it'd be nice to have it last longer than it does....in the meantime I'll just keep using the ac adapter.

Hey, I have a Nomad with a busted screeen if you plan to replace the screen I could trade the controler and screen board, making modding to the pocket tv to fit the nomad easy and I could get the part with the regular screen.

Here's an update on The Nomad Project. I bought a Nomad on eBay for $72, and it just arrived today. I will begin testing it on my pocket tv screen shortly.

Somewhat oftopic: I went to the used game store to get some Genesis games, and while I was there, I happened to see a mini-Snes. Those things are even smaller than I thought. I just may have to get one eventually.

I didn't look for a price.

Nomad update: I got it working with the pocket tv. With composite it was okay, but with RGB it was dark. I think it was becuase the Nomad had to share the RGB signal between the two screens. When I remove the original screen, it'll probably look a little better. Unfortunately, while I was adjusting the picture, the screen went blank, and it started smoking. I promptly disconnected the batteries. I looked around the board, I couldn't find any short circuits. Then turned it back on and looked for the source of the smoke. On the top circuit board there was a small component that had a spot that was red hot. That's where the smoke was coming from. I have no idea what this thing does or why it was burning. I'll get a photo up tonight or tommorrow. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't figure out what could be wrong, so I will probably sell this screen and buy a new one. Does anybody happen to know of any good TFT LCDs that are the same size as the Nomad's screen? It needs to be able to accept an RGB signal.

Let me know if you find out...I busted the screen on my Nomad about a year back and when I called SEGA they told me I was crap outta luck. It'd be nice if I could replace the screen...some day.

there was a charger pack for the nomad. You plugged it into the wall jack to charger for awhile(pretty long from empty if I remember correctly) and then hooked it on to the back. Much better battery life than the 6 batteries. I easily got 5 hours out of it. May be a bit longer or shorter, it dont have my nomad anymore, plus the guy I sold it to says the charge pack is dead now, doesnt hold a charge. The thing was a god send for anyone with a nomad
