Two low-budget SNESp's in the making (need help)

Post by JeffMan »

My friend and I are deciding to turn our old SNES's into portables. We are just gonna use the original case for it, because we don't want to spend any more money than we have to. I was just wondering a few basic questions, though (we're using PSOne screens, BTW):

- Does anyone have a schematic of the power hookups for the batteries and screen and such? Like, where the wires go from the battery, to the 7805, then where on the screen and so forth. Also, do I connect the ground on the screen to the ground on the SNES? (p.s: where's ground on the SNES?)
- Where are video and audio composite out pins on the original SNES board, and where are video and audio in on the PSOne screen?
- How would I go about keeping the composite out port on the SNES so I can still output to a TV?
- How would I make it so I can also use wall power on the SNES so that I don't have to use batteries all the time?

Sorry if these questions are noobish, I'm new to this. If there's a topic or forum somewhere where these questions can easily be answered, please direct me to it so I don't have to whine here :P

His book explains the mini-SNES though, and we're using the 1995 board... I assume there might be some major or minor differences, dunno. Thanks though, I'll look into it.

Im 99% shure this has been answered, but hey, I'm waiting for the paint to dry.

Answer 1: Connect 5V to the output pin of the 7805 If your taking it out, or just put anything over 5V (well actually anything over 7v or something) into the imput pin.

Pin 1= imput, Middle pin= ground, right pin= output (5v)
The ground is the shiny stuff all around the edges of the board, and to the middle of the 7805.

2: Dont know em off the top of my head, but theyre listed on POD.

3: Just wire the video listed on the pinouts, But instead of removing the plug, just leave it. (Unless you dont want video going to both, thats another thing)

4: Also On POD Use a switch. Switch going left= Wall plug +, Switch in middle= OFF, switch in right= battterys Imput. If you did this, you would need to leave the 7805 on board, as the wall plug would probably fry your SNES unregulated.

Oh and for the controller, He's correct! If you can make your own pinouts (Like I did a while ago) Its not too hard. Otherwise, you'll have to wait and see if I can find them sometime this week.

Awesome, thanks for all the help, I appreciate it :D
The POD site isn't working for me right now though, is it down?

Edit: So for the PSOne, do I just solder a wire from pin 3 of the 7805 to the screen so that it's in parallel? And then ground from the screen to pin 2 of the 7805 or any of the other grounds on the SNES?

don't know if you still need this, but i have the audio/video diagram in my N64 guide (N64 and SNES have the same AV pinout so it'll work)

Alright, thanks for that, I'll consider it.

I made a simple power schematic in paint... please tell me if my mix-up between ground and negative will make anything explode:

Oops, you've got your permissions wrong on your webserver. It wants a user name and password, might want to fix that :)

yeah but the screen can accept 7.2 volts directly so no need for the extra regulator

Hey, you're looking good there. No problems except there technically isn't a single 7805 you connect to with the psone screen, rather you connect the 7.2v to the Vin traces on the screen.

Alright, thanks. I don't have the screen yet, so I'm hoping it'll be easy to trace to where the V-in is.

Edit: New schematic:
