On a scale of 1-10 How screwed am I?

Post by catmondoo22 »

Ok i have been wanting to get into portable for awhile now and ive been doing research, this is gonna be my first portable and I'm making it a N64. The reason why is beacuse thisis the only system that i would really want portable, besides dreamcast, and I thought it would be fun. I hae a real basic design for it and im not actually changing anythign ont the orginal mother board for the N64. I'm just adding a ps one screen and relocating the bottons, itll look kinda like a game boy. or like the game pad add on you couold get for the orignal n64. Do you think this is too hard a prodject for a begginer? gimmie a numer of screwitity 1-10, and help or suggestion if you ahve them. :D

Well at least your not trying to do the Dreamcast (that would be a 10). The N64 shouldn't be too hard especially with all the resources we have. a lot of people have completed N64s, so you should be fine.

I'm with the G man. The N64 is a great system, and a lot of people do use N64s for their first portable(it was my first), but the N64 mobo is very easy to fry, so you will probably go through a couple. If you can get your hands on one of the ones made in 1996(NUS-001 to 007 i believe), hang on to it. They are the most tolerant N64 mobos, so if you accedently give the 3.3V line something like 4V, it will probably be fine, where the later boards would fry.

ok here is one of two layouts im gonna try, the second one is where the screen and buttons are mounted to the botto of a regular n64 and the cart is sticking out the back along wiht the reset and power swiches

If you are going to post pictures, either crop them to a reasonable size that won't stretch the screen, or link to it.

Your A, B, and C, buttons, as well as the joystick are way too close to the center. If you could somehow fit the controller board above the mobo and memory/jumper pak in the center, you'd still be reaching too far. Unless you cover the power and reset switches, you will accedently hit them all the time, which means you better save often. If you want to go with that design, you'll also have to mount the screen on the back(like how it attaches to a PSone), because you have a lot less room on an N64 than what you drew.

put the cart slot somewhere else and put the buttons closer to the sides and put the power/reset switches out of the way and it'll be good :D . N64s not a bad thing to start with; i'm started with one and it's not too hard
