Help With making an portable GBA SP

hi. i am new to this stuff. I have an extra gba: sp lying around and i want to do something with it. I want to put the LCD screen, motherboard and cartridge slot into 1 Altoids tin and a controller in another one. Is it possible to create a wired controller in a different Altoids tin? Does anyone know if this is possible, if so how would i do it? I am guessing soldering is involved which is alright. Thanks for the help in advance. i have a wired gamepad for the computer i plan on using for the controller in the other tin. lastly, can you directly hook up a sd card to the gba:sp motherboard?
