GC Screen Hacking Successful!

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

GC Screen Hacking Successful!

Post by G-force »

(why do I always have an exclamation point at the end of my posts?)

So yeah, I got my Intec GC screen to run off 6 rechargeable AA's (at 1.4V each, so 8.4V).

First I tried running it off 6 AA's through the DC power plug. No dice. The audio amp worked but the screen had no video and the backlight was flashing.

So I opened it up and looked around. I found that the power from the wall (19 volts) went to the video/audio board where it got converted into 12V. The 12V went into the LCD, and on the LCD the 12V got turned into 5V by a 7805 regulator. So why have the power converted twice? I have no idea!

So I removed the 12V wires going to the LCD (they are blue and red. For some reason they had two 12V wires that connected on the LCD board anyways  ) and then soldered power from the batterys directly to the LCD. I turned it on and it worked! And since the audio amp works already off 6 AA's I didn't have to do anything special there.

Also it's possible to do an LED mod to the screen, it's very similar to a PSOne screen. Just be sure to unscrew the screw holding the LCD board onto the LCD.

I haven't checked the amperage for the screen yet, but I was running it off a 1 Amp 19V power supply originally, so I would guess it's around an amp.

BTW, the LCD itself is a Casio passive matrix screen.

So yeah, I'm glad I didn't destroy the screen like I was planning

One thing I would like to know is, what are all those wires going to the LCD? There are green, yellow, pink, white wires and I have no idea what they are. Some of them must be a switch thing, because the LCD won't turn on unless video is being supplied. The other wires I know, they are black (gnd), red (12V), and blue (12V).

Basically I go it to run off 6 AA's and I can hook up video and audio to it.

It was a 5 inch, Intec, purple GC screen. you can find them on ebay for $5-$10 pretty easily. Be warned they are pretty blurry since they are passive matrix, but it's still very playable.
