Attempting an Atari

Post by Sparkfist »

As my last thread stated I was expecting an Atari (4 switch) 2600 in the mail. Well to day it came, I'm soo excited! As the first thing I did was check over see everything is there. So now I'm going to ask some ove you what I shoudl put into this. Like second controller port, sterio sound (a lil silly sounding), A/V out, ect.

Anything would be of great input, esecally those that have built one.

P.S. is it going to be hard to cut the board down with a scroll saw. Its the only power saw I can use without losing control.

Well, doing sumthing new in the 2600 area would be a little hard. You might as well go all out with ports, a/v in and out, internal battery pack with recharger (like the SNES i think has one, the oneben made recently) do the master/slave game port, everything. Make it small and nice, and youll have a sweet portable. Maybe even attempt the 2600 with card reader or w/e sumone did.

Well I'll see what I can do. I was going to set the board and screen up like Ben's Vegabon. The battery charger, thanks I hadnt thought of that.

One thing though card reader? Never heard of one for the atari. Closest thing to that I was think of is if I can get the money buy a programers package off ebay.

Thanks for the input Omegabuilt

Stereo sound would be a good idea if you're planning on having tv-out. Also, be sure to have a switch to go to mono, since sometimes the sound is a bit too separated (music on one speaker and sound effects on the other)

I'll be honest with you - I would have never guessed that.

That sounds strange.

Right now I'll add another question, do any of you think the power regulator could handle an input of 9.6v. I have a 7.2v battery but if I can get a 9.6v battery I can see about incorperating the screen from my hip screen. Aswell simplify setting up audio.

yeah, the 7805 can handle 9.6V
Also, If I remember right, the sepperate audio channels in both the atari and nes carry different signals, one carries the triangle wave pattern while the other carries the square wave pattern (or something like that at least)

I'd like to spend the time to rebuild the atari but... I have pitfall (need I say more. I just want to get this system up and running as soon as possible.

I have spoken with Gannon in a different thread about getting the three chips and making the board myself. I may do that later down the road but like I said I want a working VCSp ASAP.

Well I cut the atari board with a scroll saw (dont duplicate), wired up power, and I think I'm missing one wire to make video work, havent connected audio. From my stand point if I work like this every day by Wensday I shuld have the thing completed.

Edit 1 - 10:33 pm est, I've tested the video audio with pitfall... All I got was an annoying low hummung sound and gray scale lines on the screen. I know SpongeBuell or Ben could help me out on what I've done or need to do. So I'm open to suggestions.
