My old NES 101 bit it along time ago 6-7 years. One day it quit powering on. I thought it was the swich so I soldered two wire board so now the NES is always on but NES will now freeze right after I "turn it on". If I hit reset I'm give a blue screen.
I thought maybe some one has seen somthing like his when making a portable with a NES-001.

NEW connector? If not, get one and try it. The less force you need to insert it 100% in, the worse the connector is. No force=a dead connector. Some=Random crashes. Hard to play. a lot=Good to go. Thats mostly what does wrong, as I've never had any of my 13 NES's actually have anything wrong with them, and I've never even heard of a bad PPU,2A03, Or anything else on the NES so more then likely, it's just your connector.
Hope this helps.

Re: NES-101 troubleshooting
The thing this is a TOP loader. Pen can not be replaced! Also, It dose NOT have lock out chip that fooks up the normal NES.

Re: NES-101 troubleshooting
Sounds exactly like a connector problem, still. I'd take it out of the case (The PCB) and scrub the thing under a sink, scrubbing the connector with a tooth brush, and then dry it off. Connector might not be bad, just dirty. And if that doesn't work, try it with a game genie. The board on the game genie is thicker (Don't use it a lot! It could ruin your connector. It eats my toasters new connectors) and just try it with that. If still nothing comes up, I am not sure what to say. Maybe a dead 2A02. (Micro) If sounds are playing and it's taking input to start a game with no video still, it could be a PPU problem. Check the 2K RAM inside it possibly after that could possibly help.
Yes, it doesn't have the lockout, which is why thirdy party games have the lockout circuit inside them. (and if not turned off on Camerica games with the toploader, it will be injected with a lot of current and will destroy the lockout circuit! That would be kinda bad, so make sure it's off!

Re: NES-101 troubleshooting
The game genie doesn't fit properly into a top-loader without the adapter from galoob.

I'll keep cleaning the Deck and see if it helps. When it locks up. Sounds stop and Frizes video.
I have few Camerica games. How do I shut down the lockout circuit on them?

Make sure the switch on the back is flipped to the right position. I am not sure what that position is, though, as I don't have a toploader yet. But I think it's B, but DON'T do it until your sure, double check as I am too lazy too. XD
Ahhh, I only thought the adapter was made to not screw up your systems connector, but I guess thats correct.
And toploader connectors still go bad, it's just harder to make them do so. Like my N64. My N64's connector is shot. But my SNES connector and Genesis are great!
I hope you get it working. I'd put some Wieman on a toothbrush and brush them. It makes connectors in games brand new with minimum to no damage at all. Thats an idea! Just get it all off, or a white residue will be on it.

Re: NES-101 troubleshooting
I've tried to clean it with brush but it a no go. I have a new Top loader but I've keep thing for 11 or so years now that I thing about it hopeing to fix it. After that much time of it being tossed around somthing more could have broke...

Re: NES-101 troubleshooting
Hmmm....I am not sure. I'd say next thing to try would be to test the 2A03 inside it but thats just me. And if you have any skills with fixing electronics, reflow solder to joints to make sure they aren't cracked.
Sounds like a technical problem now......which is strange. Systems are usually impossible to make fail but who knows what happened. :/ Oh well.
