360 laptop

Post by weaver »

Started making a 360 laptop today out of my jtagged console.
So far I have swapped the GPU heatsink for a CPU heatsink from a jasper, added a 45mm 12v fan and 12v modded the stock fans.
Looking for a screen with a nice resolution and under 12".
Here's some pictures.

i use the same fans :D

because you have switched out the GPU heatsink you might want to look into some small chipset sinks for the ram, they are usually covered by the GPU sink.

screen ideas?

Thanks for the info humakabula1. I'll get some chipset heatsinks for the ram today.
I was thinking about this screen. http://www.aliexpress.com/store/600281/ ... odule.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
For some reason the site won't let me get it because it keeps saying I entered a invalid security code but I've tried a bunch of times and am sure it is correct.

nice screen,
may be a little small though, unless your making a smaller 'footprint' laptop.

personally im using a 14" which leaves me room either side of the screen for speakers

I'm actually not using that screen since the site is really buggy and won't let me purchase it.
I am going to be using a 9" screen from AEI components. It's a little expensive but I believe it is really good quality and fairly slim. Here's a link to it. http://www.aeicomp.com/Detail.asp?Produ ... 6_LCD9WVGA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I know it's small but thats what I'm going for.

Once this project is complete I'm going to start working on a 360 slim or 360 slim laptop project.
It will be made from a jtagged jasper unit and have thermolab nano silencer heatsinks on the cpu and gpu. I'm not sure if it will just be a slimmed down unit or laptop yet.

I have a question about relocating the ring of light.
Do I have to desolder the connecter or can I just solder directly to the board to ROL?
I've had lots of trouble desoldering components off 360 boards.

I'm not relocating the ring of light on this project but will be on the next one since it will be slim.

screen looks good, small but you want it like that :)

good to see people using my cpu cooler idea :!:
i did find another cooler that is 0.9 thinner than the nano silencer.
Spoiler:

i haven't actually used this one though so i don't know how well it holds out.

with desoldering;
are you using flux on the pins? it seems to get the solder going better than when you don't use it.
also try and use leaded solder (not sure if you can buy it where you are :? ) it has the same effect.
i am actually terrible at desoldering myself :P but i have managed to get a few ports off of boards.

The flux I am using is called tinning flux. This is most likely my problem as it is made for soldering tin but, it still makes the solder flow well on everything else I've soldered just not on the 360.

I'm using a 25W soldering iron. Maybe It doesn't get hot enough for the 360's solder?
What wattage is the iron you use?

K I'll get a new one today. The highest wattage I can find in my area is 60W. I'm sure that'll do.
or would 45W do aswell?
Thanks again man.

Edit: when I get that screen is it safe to wire it directly to a 12v line on the board? It takes 800mah is that to much?

Atm im using a 60W iron, my last one died on me...t'was a good iron :(

Haha, the only thing im not 100% sure on is screen power vs. Mobo power :P
You have a multi metre? Check the pins (you want to wire the screen to) and try and get the ampage (i think thats what its called) if its within the range it should be good, might want to ask around first :P

If it doesn't have enough power would it fry my boards or would it just not power on?
I got a 60W iron last night and desoldered the usb's without a problem until I went to solder them back on. The solder pads on the board are black looking now and won't hold any solder:(
I think I'll be stuck just using the one usb on the back unless there is another way to attach some usb's.

I'm going to try relocating a ring of light today. I'm not going to desolder the connector. I'm just going to solder from the bottom of the board to the ROL board. Is it just the 9 pins or do I have to connect the larger 2 pins for ground?

Got the ROL relocated this morning on the 1st try. Now I just need to get those heatsinks and relocate the HDD and I should have a 360 that is around 45mm thick or close to that.

I just wired up the VGA cable to the board but when I test it out I get nothing.
Here is a pic of how I have it wired up.

and for some reason all the pins that are not being used are grounded as well. Could this be the problem?
Do I need to add a switch from pins 18 to 20 like in this diagram.
