Pardon me if it's been said before, but what of modding a PSP to include another analog stick, some appropriate PS2 bits, and a USB drive?
My technical knowledge is aftermarket--that being said, I know very little of the insides of things. I can put labeled parts together, but ask me anything about voltage or soldering and I'll stare at you blankly. The extent of my hardware mod experience isn't really modding at all; I can replace broken parts if the screws are clearly visible, and that's about all.
However, I feel that, given the feats others have accomplished, there might be SOME way to do this. I assume it would require a case mod to fit the PS2 bits, as well as a USB hack to run games from the drive itself instead of a disk drive--or, perhaps, a program/wiring set up to allow SD card functionality. I don't know how one would go about it all--perhaps hollowing out the entire PSP, leaving behind only the screen and buttons, then poking a hole somewhere to include a second analog stick, followed by adding in the PS2 board and wiring it all up. Apologies, again, for how horrifically nooby this all sounds. I'm no engineer, but it seems doable.
The outcome, of course, being a PSP-sized PS2. From what I've seen of the PS2 portables, they're rather bulky (no offense, as they're truly a feat of construction I could only dream about accomplishing).
How likely is this kind of project to reach fruition? I'm sure there are problems I'm failing to recognize as a noob--perhaps the board on a PS2 is so completely different, it could never be done. I don't imagine the board could be cut to fit the PSP without losing vital functionality. Again, though, there might be "some" way.
You all seem nice enough not to flame me for being so new..
