Hey all, got a problem and figured you guys would be the best to ask

Basically, sometime last year my old computer finally gave up the ghost due to a virus corrupting everything, i just left it be and moved on. However i realised theres some old videos and pictures on there that aren't replecated anywhere else so i thought id try and get at them, the data is still there but the OS is buggered, so i put it in as a slave in my current computer. Fairly simple right?

Not quite, the virus messed around all the security settings cutting me out of a lot of my folders, the folder in question i want to get at keeps telling me i do not have access to it and wont let me in. So i was wondering is there anyway to get around/change this? Any help would be really helpful

Have you tried running a liveCD of a linux distro? I'm not sure if permissions would matter much, but I'm sure theres a way to get it off using that.

This would definitely be the way I would go.

+1. And the permission definitely won't matter if you use a Puppy Linux CD - you're always root.

Both the failed hard drive plus the second computer i put it in are both XP

Damn I was hoping the answer wasn't linux (i dont get on with it very well) Is it possible to do it as a USB boot rather than CD? I haven't got any CD-R's lying around at the moment.

Using a Linux live CD might not fix this if you copy files directly from one hard drive to the other, since they're both NTFS partitions and the permissions will be copied over as well. You would have to copy them to a FAT formatted USB drive first, then to your hard drive. (I really don't like Linux either... The stupid guh-noo slash fanboys ruin it.)

Try taking ownership of the folders instead. As long as you don't have any filesystem-level encrypted files, this will work.

Here is what I think:

When you had your old computer, you checked the box that said "dont let other users see my files" or something to that extent. The files are marked by XP as being "owned" by your username.

Now you have those files/folders in another computer with a different username. You simply do not own the files as far as windows is concerned.

This has happened to me before anyways.

The solution is to restart in safe mode, go to the files you cant access, right click > security, and then mess around with the ownership settings. I dont remember exactly what to do, need to restart to access the menu. Just google it. (Edit: bic posted the link)

Argh.

Plug it into your new PC.

Windows (or your OS) should of course find it and Install new Hardware.

Go to 'My Computer', and open your HDD that was corrupted and move your data to your new HDD.


Oh, and yes. You need to set the permissions to access the drive if it had any (Which the NTFS 'special' Windows / DOS format actually does)

No you can not get a virus, unless you copy the virus that caused it and execute it (IE: Keygen.exe), or the virus itself which will be hard to find as most of them hid in System32 and other folders regarding the depth of the Windows folder. Most run at Windows Startup and name themselves as a 'Microsoft Corporation' file. So you know it is good when it actually is not. Those also slow down you PC (Depending on what it is programed to do / snoop for) and it may also create pop-up's (IE: Your antivirus is out of date or Click here to remove the found virus) which will take you to their website to pay for a tool the virus developers programmed to do and make easy money from computer N0obs
