N64 power

Post by omegabullit »

A LONG time ago i started planning out a N64 portable. NiN_NiN was helping me with the power. At the time, I remember needing a 7805LD and a 3.3V LDO. This way I could put a certain number of volts straight in to N64, the 3.3v LDO, and the screen. Sorry I have no numbers, but Im going off memory here. Could someone sorta sum up what I need to power the N64? Thanks.

yeah, a 3.3V regulator is all you need, unless you want to run the n64 off of less than 7.2V, then you'll also need a 5V ldo.

So what would suggest running in, having batteries set up for 12v, run them into the 12v line and into the 3.3v regulator which goes into the 64?

the 12V line on the n64 only leads to a 7805, so it only requires 7.2V. IF you replace the 7805 with a 5V ldo regulator you can run the 12V line off of less than 7.2V.

Alright. That way I could figure out what voltage I needed for my screen, that way I could just run watevers going into that into the N64 also. Convinient :)

Well, I bought a 7805 5v regulator, and I bought an adjustable regulator. The old guy at radio shack tried to explain to me how to use it, mentioning something about using a pot from the adjustable pin, that leads to the Voltage Out Pin. I was wondering, could I jus run a resistor from the adjustable to the Voltage out pin? I'm not sure if anyone has delt with these before, but I figuerd I would ask.

yeah, since all a pot would do is allow you to adjust the Vout.

so wat should i get? cant i jus replace the pot with a specific resistor that will put out the 3.3v that i need, that way not having to worry about the adjuster?

a resistor is fine, although I'm not sure what resistance you need to get the 3.3V out. Also, is the amp level of that regulator high enough?

i think so, heres the maximum ratings:

power dissipation 15W
input-output
voltage differential 40v
load regulation .1%V
fine regulation .01%v
ripple rejection 80dB

Is it Smart to NOT use a 12v-3v power converter and just use 3v and 12v instead

Why does it matter? I really dont feel like having to put 12v into this thing. Plus, I already bought the 7805, so I might as well go for it.

Well, the adjustable regulator is not working. Way to much of a pain. Of course radioshack.com and the stores dont have a 3.3v regulator. I've heard people talk of a car adaptor that does it. Any info on this?

The car adapter has a 1 amp limit, so you'll probably need to use 2 of them, and I think they cost at least $10 a piece. I'd recommend buying one from mouser.

Is it just like, a game adapter that lets you plug into the cigarette lighter?
