Do I need this?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Do I need this?

Post by G-force »

Okay I removed all the backlighting crap on my hip gear screen so I could do an LED mod. But there was this black thing (circled in red) that was preventing me from fitting it in the height I had. So I desoldered it from the Hip Gear screen. BUT, little did I know, the only thing holding the pins to the black thing were teeny-tiny, itst-bitsy, pieces of wire! When I desoldered it I broke the wires :(

I think I could resolder the black thing with some really small wire, but if I don't need it then I'll just leave it off. So can you tell me if it goes to the backlight or not?

Here are some pics of it before I desoldered it:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's what I think it is. Hopefully it's for the backlight and I won't need it, but if it's for the LCD then I have a hell of a job resoldering it awaiting me.

Once I get home I'm gonna try wiring it to 5V and some video source to it and see if it works without it. If I remember right 5V is enough right?

Well I tried it and no dice. It wouldn't display an image (don't worry I didn't forget to backlight the screen  I used a flashlight)

I tested for voltage going into the black thing and about 3 of the pins had 5V.

So now I get to rewire the dang thing. It's gonna be hard, the wires on the black thing are the size of a hair! Wish me luck....
