PS3 blinking red light of death

Post by Blank-Disk »

Last night while I was playing a game, my PS3 shut down. Now I get the red blinking light of death (turns on normally for about 2 seconds, then the light goes yellow, then flashes red eternally). I've taken the whole thing apart, but I can't see anything visibly wrong. The CMOS battery looks good, the cooling system is okay, everything was plugged in. I really can't figure it out. has there been any breakthroughs in knowing what the problem is, or are guys like me with the old 60 Gigs jsut screwed?

It sounds like PSU problems then. Something in the PSU is most likely shorting. The only thing you can do is check all the connections and try to go from there or buy a new PSU for launch models.

Hot freakin' damn I fixed it! After an exhaustive search, I finally found a video on youtube with a solution, and it worked. It turns out that the GPU and/or the CPU get overheated and the solder connections to the board go bad. The guy said to use a heat gun at about 700 degrees and hover around the two chipsets for a few minutes. I'll be damned, it worked, my PS3 is running just fine now. This guy just saved me a ton of money.
