Lab power supply in gamecube case

Post by teego »

It all started out innocent enough. My 12 volt power supply stopped working and I wanted to do some bench testing on an indash mp3 player before I put it in my truck. I looked up projects on google and found some great tutorials on turning an old AT or ATX power supply into a test bench power supply. Having spent some serious time lurking here on benheck I decided that I needed a cooler case than the original power supply box. Here is what I ended up with:

In this picture you can see the circuit board out of the PS attached to the base of the Gamecube base. Note how I turned the heat sink fins at 90 degree angles for clearance

Here I have the original fan out of the PS. The GC emblem is within a 16th of an inch of being a perfect match for the top of the fan. I cut out the area under the GC emblem. The fan mounts to the top and then the GC emblem ontop the fan (drilled for airflow) for a an extra touch.

The face plate with the connection block in place. The 4 connections will be -5v, -12v, +5v, +12v giving me a voltage range of 5v, 10v, 12v, 17v, and 24v. A big step up from my old power supply that was 12v only (and made in like 1975)

The next 5 pics show the top, front, sides, and back. The blocking material behind the factory holes is an old sony speaker grill cut up and hot glued into place to give it a little style. On the back note the much larger hole thats been cut into it. Got a little ahead of myself and cut a hole to mount my power in connector, but it fell right in the middle of the circuit board. Thats how it ended up relocated to the side panel.

Very nice! Although I would have used binding posts. Where's the ground connection?

A little banged up, and probably a complete waste of a gamecube case (in my opinion) but nonetheless pretty neat
What else're ye going to do with em? I've got about 6 or 7, maybe I should build a fort.

I like it! It makes a very nice power supply. I may have to steal your idea at some point in the future. The handle is a really nice touch.

The ground is visible in the pic of the front of the finished item. Its the wing nut on the lower left side.

Binding posts were plan A. Couldn't locate them easily. With 4 posts and 4 controller ports it would be the best plan.

I used my worst case (i have tons of these things layign around) now that I have it kind of teched out the next one will be much nicer (and use binding posts)
