SNES Anti-portable...

Post by SNESArcade »

Hey everyone, just thought I'd introduce myself. Name's JD, I'm an engineering student at Purdue. I found these boards today while looking for some cart slot relocation info, and thought I'd join. This post is just kind of a teaser for my upcoming project. Thanks to info provided by a few members here, I'll soon be starting work on an SNES based arcade cabinet system. I'm planning to use 2 super advantage contollers and a dedicated flat tube TV. My original idea was to use it solely for Steet Fighter II, but the more I thought about it the more I wanted it to do. The cart slot will be relocated to the control panel of the cabinet, allowing the system to play any SNES game, arcade style. I also intend to give it an extra plug-in for the super scope, to extend its compatibility even further. What do you all think? Ideas/constructive criticisms are welcome.
Pictures of the finished project will definitely be posted, I hope to have it completed by June.

When you say that you are moving the cart slot to the control panel, are you going to have it jukebox style or manual game switching?

It'll be manual. Jukebox style would be incredible, but I feel it would be an unnecessary amount of initial work and too difficult to maintain. I plan to keep this thing for a looooong time, preferably in working order :D

Cool idea though.

would be cool to wire up a bunch of cart slots in a series so you could switch from one to another and add more and more gamse to it....but thats would be one hell of a lot of sockets and wiring

LOL, I thought about that. The SNES would actually be one of the easiest systems to jukeboxilize, because it has the eject button. The easiest of coarse would be CD systems.

Wait, you live in a dorm, right? So you can put this thing out in the hallway and hook-up one of those coin-deals and make big bucks!
And for the several cart slots, put em behind a glass door or something, so the people can see the games to choose, but cant run off with them.

Why disconnect the cart slot when you can just mount the SNES on the controll panel and have the cart slot where you want it? It would be a lot easier and make more sense. I know there would be room between the two controllers to place a SNES there.

Lol, yeah, I thought about the coin thing. But by the time I have it done I'll be in an apartment, so no dice. I'm really just building this for my own personal entertainment, and maybe a little wow factor when I have guests. While it would be really easy just to mount the SNES to the control panel, I think the whole package would look more professional if it was enclosed, with just the card slot exposed. Multiple cart slots would be interesting, but 124 solder joints is enough for me thanks, lol. I will also have a pair of slots for auxiliary controllers (super scope, or additional regular controllers, for example) and an access panel for which I could use a multi-tap to use the 2 built-in arcade contollers and 2 regular controllers all at once (for games like TMNT Turtles in Time). I have some ideas going through my head for game and accessory storage, we'll see how they go over. Thanks for all the comments everyone, keep em coming.
