My concept art

Post by Doofus »

Basically, I made this image without a whole lot of knowledge of the inner workings, since I haven't been able to tear open my N64 yet (gotta buy my own, can't use the family's). So anyways, I do however know that the N64 motherboard will fit, because I'm using the same case that THIS GUY used on his. Only thing is, I'm not sure EXACTLY, although I'm fairly certain that things will all fit very tightly. I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my concept (besides a power thing being pointed at the speakers, which I assume are connected to the screen (all of it being from a PSOne screen).

Also, the green card in the back labelled "Exp Pak, Mem Pak" just basically means that's where I'll cram in the Expansion pak, and one of the larger Memory paks... I figure I can reduce size by removing the chip from the plastic casing on a lot of this stuff...

Let me know if I'm way off...

Concept, made in paint: Front/Side/Back

And as an afterthough, please don't post comments about how that's not how it's wired. I know this. The wires are there as reference... It is MSPaint after all...

WOW...............thats exactly the same design as the on im working on right now......the buttons are in the same place

BTW you can make it a lot thinner by using a chopped jumper pack instead of an expansion pack

BUT I MUST PLAY STARCRAFT64 2 PLAYERSSSSS!!!!! I MUST!!!!!

Hmmm... I'll keep that in mind. Is there a list of games that require the expansion pak? It's been so long that I don't remember what requires it besides Starcraft... Which I own. Wasn't it made specifically to accomadate some Nintendo produced game???

i don't think that you can remove the N64's jumper pack slot thingy, i'm trying to get the whole thing as thin as possible, and if i could get the socket off and then chop open a jumper pack (or possibly the upgrade one) because there are two slots cut into it that almost perfectly fit this two standoffs on either side on the ramsink.

holy crap that was one sentence... i think my english teacher just jumped off a bridge...

basically, i want to remove the socket, connect it to the mobo with wires, plug in the jumper pack, then screw the jumper pack to the standoffs.

whew...

has anyone been able to remove the socket without half the board?

I don't think Ben did it. I think he finally gave up on trying to get it to work.

Yeah, I think we're in the same boat. I've never done this before, and I want to do the same thing, relocate all the stuff.... Heh. We'll see how it goes. And good luck on your portable too!

It might be a while yet till I get all the parts however, the N64 is cheap enough, but I've been PMing a member of the forum that's in Japan trying to get one of those Hori Controllers with the cool joysticks (the Gamecube-esque ones), so we'll see how that works out. I really need to go apply at Toys 'R Us and start making some money... Because the remainder of the $27 in my wallet isn't going to cover all this stuff I still need to buy... Good thing my birthday is coming up... 8)

on a 5min afterthought I have an idea for my n64p to have it in the same arrangement as a gameboy color so the screen is at the top and the controls are at the bottom. this will look good (if it works) i also want to have the cartridge slot in the top.

Any chance you could hook me up? Some of the games that ebGames sells are like $50 each.

would laying down some desoldering braid in between the pins (there are 4 rows BTW) and then melting the solder work well enough? i've never used desoldering braid, but if someone can do this it looks like i'll need to ride my bike down to radioshack. or maybe my electronics teacher has some that i could "borrow" ( wink, wink)

the cartride socket pulls off (there isn't anything solid holding it down, just friction) and then you have to desolder the exp socket, i ended up losing patience and simply pulling off that metal plate around the socket, then sliding off the black plastic main housing of it, then holding the pins with a pair of pliers and melting the solder. it's slow, but it was faster than what i did for the other sockets, which was wedge a pair of standard screwdrivers on eith side, then melt the solder with the screwdriver twisting in-between the board and socket (this caused it to slide out when the solder was fluid, i barely caused any damage, and that was due to my ineptness (don't drink 3 cans of code red before you try this!!!) luckily it was to the sockets, nothing i needed.)
