Symbian phones have a lot of nice games and especially emulators but with their original keyboard these games are almost impossible to play (except for ngage)... so I decided to mod my old 3650 and add a Sony play station game pad. This project is pretty much simple and you don`t even need schematic for the phone. I know that this is very old phone and has a problem with small RAM but a lot of emulators are working pretty good, especially game boy emulator.... so here`s some pics of my project....
Inside the joypad....
I completely cut off the IC to avoid problems with key signals.... drill some holes parallel with original buttons (about four buttons have a common wire which will reduce the number of all wires needed).
The case of the phone is fixed with two small screws....
Yep, symbian is a great OS, so far I have tested a bunch of emulators including commodore64, ZXspectrum, MSX1 and MSX2, sega sms - game gear - genesis/32, nes - snes, game boy - color - advance and there`s even Palm OS and x386 emulator.... they all work great but with new edition phones such as N95 and other s60v3 units....
That thing's awesome! If you were to somehow make the integration more seamless, like cutting the top half of the phone case off and bondoing it to the top of the PSX controller, it would truly be gorgeous. From a functionality standpoint, though, this is a very clever implementation.
I intended to do that but didn`t have much time and just wanted to check how it will work.... I will mod nokia 6600 next (as soon as I find a cheap one) and will be able to play even n-gage games (6600 is much faster and has a lot of RAM)....
