Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

Electricity/Groundng question

Post by woox »

Just got a few questions on grounding, I see that on the power source of a ps3 or any electornic device (monitor), on 3 pronged power source, there is a GROUND which screws in to the metal frame of the device, and 2 other wires which are the main power source...what exactly does the grounding wire do? And does it matter where I ground the wires as long as they touch another peiece of metal within the device I am making?

Also, what is the YELLOW part called in this image, and what possibly is its function? Thanks :)

The three prongs are Power, Neutral, and Ground. The Ground terminal is used for safety reasons, mostly. It is tied directly to....the ground outside your house. If there is an short somewhere in the device the electricity will go through the ground rather than you. Two-pronged devices don't have this protection, they rely on the Power and Neutral lines only.

As long as all the "grounds" are connected in some reliable manner it's fine.

Those yellow things... are they a connector of some kind? Maybe a fuse? Hard to say, the picture isn't very clear.
