Karp's first NESp design //Complete

Post by Rekarp »

Hello all. Well this will be my first adventure into the world of portablizing consoles so i decided to start off with the NES. I have some basic knowledge of electronics so this shouldnt be to bad.

The case for the NES will be constructed out of either cherry or walnut solid wood (depends on what i have scrap in the garage). Im expecting that this case will be very heavy but almost indestructible. It will feature a 5" sony ps1 screen and a second controller port for two players.

Now onto the design!

Image

The front of the NESp. I havent added the start/select buttons yet of other switchs but those will be added once i get all my parts here.

Back of the unit. Hmm no Cart slot eh?

Im going to use the loading mechanism in this portable even tho it does add 1/8" to the overall thickness of the portable. The issue here is the clearance between the cart and the top of the portable which may make it hard to pull the cart out.

I should be starting within the next week or so, so stay tuned.

If you're looking at this post and it was made before 2008, just ignore it.

Thank you. Its going to be built out of 6 pieces; 2 top pieces, 2 side pieces, and the front and rear panals. The sides will have a routered channel so the panals countersink into the frame.

I like the hinge idea, but wouldn't the stress of pulling the cart slot back back and forth eventually make it 'blink'...hmm, also, don't just buy a hinge, try and make a custom one...a lesson I learned the hard way

I don't have to make a hinge. I am going to use the existing slot loader that is in the NES. I am not to worried about blinking so it shouldn't be a problem to me.

How is that back panel going to open without a hinge?

i have been thinking over the idea of a very nice custom wooden portable case but i suffer from a lack of real woodworking tools, i have TONS of real nice solid oak in small peices so you may see a very fancy wood case by triton in the future (would only have to buy some very thin solid wood lath type wood strips to make some of the more fancy stuff easier to shape

Update 1/07/07

Post by Rekarp »

Hello All and heres the first update for my portable.

After many hours over the soldering iron i have completed the controller boards and the voltage regulator circuits for my portable.

Image

This is the 3 in 1 Voltage/Video Amp/Controller IC board. As you can see theres a lot of wires that will hopefully hook up to the NES, the LCD, and the front controller buttons.

Image

Heres the controller buttons. The left one is for the D-pad and the right one is for the A/B Start/Select Buttons.

Till next time. 8)

Update 1/10/07

Post by Rekarp »

Hello again. My PSone screen arrived so I tore it apart and hooked it up to my NES (not the one im using for this project) to test it out.

Image

Image

Looks good huh?

Well when i put the video feed through the Video Amp things didnt look so hot.

Image

Screen is scrambled and sometimes the screen goes blank. Now since the video feed is already powerful enough could the video amp over do it causeing this to happen? Ive checked my circuit about 10 times, made sure the grounds where good, and replaced the transitor 3 times (same effect with each one).

So could it be just an over amplified input?
