Gamecube being weird

I keep getting error messages in my gamecube, mainly "gamecube error: please turn system off and read instruction manual." I think its the lens, but im not exactly sure. also, a lot of times it will bring up the screen with the options and memory card and all of the stuff, and says that theres no disk. this is really bad, especially because I am getting TP in 2 days .
how should I fix the problem?

adjust this pot on the disk drive controller to fix the disk reading problem. just turn it a little counterclockwise and test it. if that doesn't work, experiment a little. but don't turn it too much or it could burn out the laser or something
