DIY Boom Box

Post by bicostp »

Don't ask why, but I'm thinking of building a boom box out of some car speakers, an old car equalizer, and the AM/FM/CD head unit that came out of my uncle's old GMC pickup. (This may ring a bell for some of you; I asked about the connections a while back.)

The only missing link is the power. Previously I ran it off a lab PSU that pushed about 130 watts. The radio ran fine with two speakers attached. (That's all I need.)

I have an ATX PSU that can handle 72 watts on the 12v line (6 amps in case you're wondering). Think that would work?

I think there's also a PSU ou tthere that can handle 156 watts on the 12v line. That's more than the test supply, but it's not a bad power supply and I'd rather not destroy it. (the whole unit would be self contained.)

If nether of those will cut it, there's a privately owned PC repair center about 5 minutes by car from my house. I could ask them about a power supply (gotten free parts there before. 8) Kids, check YOUR yellow pages for small PC repair centers. Maybe they'll have parts for you to use!) Another option would be a PSU from CompUSA, but I'd rather not pay a whole lot for something I may very well ruin.

When you're taking the PSU apart, be carefull. If it's holding a charge it can kill you (But more likely just zap your nuts off). You may want to let it sit for a week or so to get rid of the charge.

*bump*

Can the 72 watt PSU pump enough juice to run this thing, or do I need to get another power supply?

I think the only real way to test this is to, well, test it. also take into consideration that the boom box will always have the speakers on, that only the CD play, radio, or tape deck will be on at once, and to factor in things like volume. I honestly don't know any farther than that.
