Powering the NES with 9-volts?

Post by Guest »

I just read somewhere earlier this week that you could power the NES for an hour with a 9 volt. Is this true, and if so, how would I go about hooking it up?

If it is capable, can I use 2 in like, a parallel line for 2 hours? If so, I am getting 2 rechargbables.

Yeah, you just connect the positive of the battery to the positive terminal on the NES, the negative on the batt to the negative terminal.

I think he was more concerned with verifying the lifetime of the battery :)

Well according to Ben his first few VCSp were using a alkaline 9v batter to power the atari, he said it powered for about an hour. However an NES is likely to draw more current than the atari so you may only get like 50 minutes. If you are going to use rechargables get Ni-MH as they have a higher capcity than Ni-CD and they also dont have a memory.

Enjoy.

If I remember right, alkaline 9V batteries hold 250mAh, so one should power the nes for 1/2-1 hour. I'm not sure of what the nes' draw is though.

So, since my faulty battery only powers for about 40 minutes on a good day, 2 9-volts should do me better right?

And how would I go about hooking this thing up to it?

Do this:

Code: Select all

(+) --- (+) ---- to nes "+"
(-) --- (-) ---- to nes "-"
/|\ /|\ Battery "-"
 |___Battery "+"

I think that Ben powered a NES for an hour back in his early days of portablization.

Yup:
Ben wrote:It is a little known fact that one of my earliest portable-gaming experiments happened in the spring of 1993. I was in high school and our choir was taking a trip to Washington DC. I had the notion that it would be 'really cool' to bring a NES and a Genesis with me for the long boring bus trip. My solution was to electric-tape a Genesis on top of a NES to make the world's first multi-platform portable gaming device. The thing ran off a 9 volt battery, which would run the NES for about an hour and the Genesis for about 30 minutes. Coupled with a primitive yet color pocket television (also electric-taped in place) it was a gamer's dream come true. I could play Road Rash and Battletoads to my hearts content, 45 minutes at a time.

About 850 MAh. Expect very odd behavior, most notably sound issues. ;)

Rechargables make up their cost after about half a dozen recharges. So thats a good choice.

So should I stick with the 9 volt idea? With that, I wont need to go online for shopping, cause I can get some perfboard from a friend and the other stuff from the shack. (of the radio).

Next question: http://www.playmessiah.com/products/

Are those good controllers? I plan to order one of those limited edition packs so I can cancel 2 more cords coming out of my bag.
