How about these for a portable NES?

Post by GameNut »

I have come across this thing that has NES on it at http://www.gp32x.com . Also Genesis, Turbografx etc. This would be easier and cheaper I think than building a Portable NES and is smaller. Has RGB screen, uses less batteries. What do you think about using that?

It can't run PSX or Dreamcast though.

I do like that portable SNES, Atari 2600, that was made here. I would really like to know how to get parts made with a laser engraver like many of these examples. I tried to have something laser cut once but gagged when they told me the price. Do you know a reasonable place to do it?

Thanks.

Most of us have heard of these, but emulation (that's what it is, emulation) is never quite the same as the native hardware. Besides, part of the idea is to play the massive collections of NES carts that some of us have tucked away. ^^

Also, there is an "NES-on-a-chip" that some people here have used. There is argument as to how good it is though...

Personally, I'll use the original circuitry with a Game Genie and a Famicom adapter.

Also, you dont HAVE to use complex technology to make a case. Why, for my SNES portable, I used the original case! ^^

Ben just has enough skill to make cases that look MUCH better than the original cases.
Warranty-Voiding fun!

I agree. Though I think the NOAC is more than capable of working fine typically- I have like 5 of them and they all work OK. It depends on which type of NOAC it is. People talk about them like there's only one. Most of mine are glop-tops which are probably based off of different designs (otherwise I'm sure someone would have the design for them up somewhere and everyone would have access to it). We know there's at least two or three. They pretty much all have problems with NES games because it's a Famicom on a chip. None of the NOACs actually have the stuff added to the NES in them (like the extra sound channel and stuff) so of course the sound isn't gonna be as good with NES carts. I'm not saying that's a good thing, but the way to get around it typically is to use Famicom versions of the games with the added sound hardware. There really should be a way to get the Famicom sound channels to work on the NES too using a little adapter on the bottom that just jumpers the Famicom cart audio pin (missing from the NES) to the NES' bottom port.

Anyway, people should really stop saying "the NOAC sucks" because of the build quality of some things that use it. It is usually about as good as a real Famicom, when used in a good design. The Superjoy does sound like it blows though. Then again, it's jammed in an N64 controller-size thing by some Chinese prisoners (I dunno if anyone else read that sort of thing in the newspaper- it was in Japanese news. Yes, some of your pirate goods are made by Chinese convicts).

I admit that I think the GP32 isn't actually too bad of an idea, but I also understand that others require 100% hardware-based solutions. Besides, if you have about 200 NES/Famicom carts like me, you're gonna want to use them :)
Then again, if you want a cheap portable NES, there's always the GTA, which is still probably cheaper than anything we could make (in more ways than one...) :P I'm tempted to get one and then build a new NES port onto the back of it to ensure stability (rather than keeping the sunvisor method of the Famicom carts).
Regardless, the GP32 is a valid solution if you're into that sort of thing. But for those of us who aren't... well, that's when you've gotta keep on innovating :) Someday I'm sure SNOACs and stuff will show up and people will be able to use those. I hear that there are now indeed bootleg PSones showing up in China... whether they're in any way beneficial (smaller than Sony's, etc) is another question entirely.

I loaded a pocket pc with 800+ atari roms (Thanks to AA!) It rocked. Not a gp32 but still an atari that can fit in your pocket! (I used pocketVCS)
