reviving old Logitech gamepads

Has anyone here revived a nearly worn out logitech or similarly constructed gamepad? The unit is a main board with contact pads for all buttons, the 4 way d-pad is 4 contact pads, they work by having a membrane contact under the plastic user button, the membrane is what is actually worn, the contact is a black disk of about 3/16 inch. It has one raised dot on center and corrugated "rays" outside that on one pad i own & the other has just a checkered texture. So do I simply clean that black surface or do i need to replace it either with a thin layer/completely, or move on to switches that i wire up & solder to the copper pads on the board? Should the metal switches be the best way, is there a way to house it in the pad's original case or will I need to recase?
