psone screen hacking

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

psone screen hacking

Post by deiol »

I bought a 4" casio tv to use as my screen for my portable, but after going over the electronics inside, i figured it is a waste. the tv has a tuner and mono speaker which i do not need, and figure the psone screen would be a better solution as it has inputs and no tuner, plus stereo sound.

the only problem is the board is too big for the planned size of my portable. has anyone tried shaving parts of the controller board off? could someone possibly scan both sides of the board so i can study the pcb design before i spend more money on another screen? thanks a lot in advance to anyone who can help.

If you look at many of Ben's portables he uses handheld tvs, and has never had a problem with the tuner and if the system your going to use it with is mono then I dont see a problem.

As for shaving the controller board its possible to cut some of the grounding strip off without anything bad happening. And for the pictures go to Doomportables.org, click systems and look under video mods.

I know the pocket tv poses no problem, but it is a waste. It has features on it like a tuner, which I do not need. It also has a mono audio system, and I want a stereo system, so I would need another board for stereo sound.

Or build an amp and just get two small speakers to replace the one the tv has. As for the tuner, you could see about adding switch so the tv can still work, the Atari in a Dreamcast controller was build that way (see Atari 2600 on doomportables.org).

The tuner in the tv is a waste for me, I do not watch tv. And having both an amp and the circuit on the tv for mono sound is a waste of space. Hence, me wanting to use a psone screen, or any other screen that has only an input and stero speakers.

ps. the pictures of the psone on the video mods page of doomportables was too blurry for me to see anything.

haha, no to the bandsaw idea. even if i remove the tuner, the speaker, and the voltage adapter for the backlight, i still can't hack down the board because there are other components surrounding these items on the board. so lets just scrap the pocket tv i have.

i'm looking at the psone screen or any other screen that has only an input and stereo output. it will make everything easier. if anyone has some high-res pics of the psone board or the gamecube screen's board, then please post, otherwise i guess i'll just buy one.

thanks!

Are you willing to part with the tv? And how big is it? Could you post pics if you want to sell it? Thanks.

Its a Casio EV-4500, 4" screen. It sells for like $200 at circuit city, but since I've torn it apart, I'd sell it for less. If you want pictures of the insides, e-mail me.
