CD holder

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

CD holder

Post by sweetsuzuki »

Hello there. I am building a PSoneP, and came up with the idea to use a metal CD holder for the case. I don't know if this is an original idea, but it is perfect. the mother board fits snugly, and it is about 1.5 or 2 inches thick. The only problem is cutting all the holes in it, but I have a dremel.

This will be my first portable. So far I have nearly completed the screen mod on the 3" cinevision, have determined whether it will all fit, and have completed the control assembly. screen mod not finished because I am waiting on LEDs to arrive. tomorrow I will solder all connectors/terminals to the board, and begin cutting the holes in the case.

Wow... This forum is really dead if nobody posts ANYTHING in, like two days, besides me.

It's only dead because people have posted about this same idea like a million times  Check the other threads for info, it should work provided you can get everything cut. Post pics when you're done.

OK. I'm waiting on the infolithium and white LEDs to get here before I can finish :D

EDIT: Here's a pic of when I ran a joystick board fit test. The screen and joysticks are in place, but no d-pad/ triggers. L and R buttons go on the sides, as there is no room under.

EDIT: I don't have any access to ribbon cable :( If anyone knows where to buy some, it would be very helpful if you told me where. Thanks

You can get ribbon cable by cutting apart an older IDE hard drive cable, or floppy drive cable.

Some Radio Shacks also sell ribbon cable. If not, ask a mom and pop computer place for an IDE or floppy cable.

I think I have an old 5 1/2 floppy drive somewhere...

Or tear through my fiance's old computer which just got replaced 8)

The case does hold everything very nicely... maybe enough room for the 5" psone screen :D

CD case is made by CD Projects, don't know if they're still around :? Got it from a friend a couple years ago.

The screen is the 3" casio/cinevision described in Ben's book. I think I may have messed up on it. If yes, I'll upgrade to the 5" Sony. I'm also considering resessing the controller into the case and deleting the joysticks (lots of bondo will be required).

EDIT: found ribbon cable, but not in the floppy drive. By some kind of miracle, My local radioshack still carries it. 2 feet for 8 bucks. not bad.

White LEDs came in the mail, will be finishing soon

Well this is gonna sound stupid BUT:

What's a CD case? Is it a holder for many cd's or one... dvd? What was the kind you used?

It's a 20 cd case. It is made of thin steel and had flimsy "pages" that easily pull out. The brand is CD Projects. These are extremely durable. I threw a ps2 controller at it cuz I was pissed off at Stuntman, and it put a small dent in it. a plastic case would have cracked. With a pair of nibblers, and a dremel, this case is very easy to mod 8)

Wal-Mart usually has about a half-dozen styles of cases like this in the electronics section.
