when cranked to full brightness, sure. It also depends on how your holding the thing. Mines too dark when hloding straight, I had to angle it down to make the the screen brighter(before jumping the CV23)
SNESp - 100%
Protable X - 15% - I need money :(

I got on ebay and bought the LEDs for my backlight mod. According to the specs they are brighter than the one Ben says to use in the book. To me it looks just as bright as the tube that it normally has. Also, to make the lighting you could get more LEDs that have a lower MCD rating and put about 6 in it instead of 3. I'll probably put 4 or 6 in my next portable instead of 3.

I really liked the brightness mod, it looks great! I have no idea where you got this "destroys contrast" idea. The colors and everything are pretty much the same as before. Maybe your screen didn't need the mod, and when you did the mod it really screwed it up.

If you don't do the LED mod, how much battery life can one expect to lose?

Depends, the screen will eat up an extra 650 mA though. I suggest the LED mod, there have been significant improvements to it (brighter LEDs, tin-foil/mylar backing to distribute light, etc…) that make it worth it. I am definitely doing it on mine, mainly so I don't kill myself with the 1000+ volts off of the invertor. I want to be able to run the screen while open and it's not really safe with the inverter still in there.
