Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

There was a website about a guy who made his own, fullsize laser engraver, find it and check it out, then come back to this thread, you won't have the same views.

The laser alone cost him a couple thousand dollars.

I havent looked at any of the links, so i might be repeating information.

Using a Point Plotter printer you can make a crude CNC machine. I know someone that used an old dremel, a point plotter, and some clever modding to make a crude CNC machine. The only drawback was that he was very limited on what kind of materials he could use, and how deep he could engrave. He had to create custom drivers for the printer (under linux) so it can print the points slower. If it were to go at its original speed the bits in the dremel would break. I know he used it to engrave stuff into some lexan, build and drill PCBs, and engrave things into PC side pannels. He couldnt cut metal pannels, but plasics worked out just fine.

there might be some usefull info here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CNC-HomeBrew/

EDIT: the dude that made the CNC printer used a dremel flex shaft. He didnt mount the whole dremel to the head. It was too heavy.

EDIT 2: Another decent link for you people. http://jfthier.free.fr/aerosquare_en/cn ... _01_en.htm

Well, that depends on your definition of alive, I guess... :?

Anyways, http://www.crankorgan.com/ sells plans for a variety of hardware store CNC machines. I bought plans for the 7th sojourn. They're very complete, and once you buy plans you get access to the forums on the website, and there is lots of help there. In case any of you are considering it, realize it takes work, and money. Not to mention the fact that even if you build your machine, you've got an uphill battle to fight with software.

I've had the plans for almost a year, and haven't even started building mine.
