Running old game systems off of an old AT PSU

Post by Dragoon »

I know it sounds odd, but I'm taking a few old systems and putting them into a new case, but I'd like them to share a power supply. I know the SNES and the Genesis two both have 7805 regulators on the motherboards, so does that mean I could safely power them with an old 250W AT PSU with the +12v - 10.0A line? The power supplies for the Genesis 2 and the SNES are both 10v .85A, but that gets coverted into 5v from the 7805 regulator anyway, right? The 10.0A is the max the PSU can output under heavy load, I believe, so my question is would it fry the Genesis or SNES motherboards? Also, since these systems would be hooked up to this one PSU, if they were both turned on at the same time, would the PSU overload or would the amount of Amps it is producing be too great and it fry both boards?

If I'm not being clear enough, feel free to ask me further questions about this.

Alright, will do, thx for the replies!

It may take a bit, because it's only a side project right now. I've been really busy with some other things.

You guys reassured me enough to get enough courage to try it out (I really didn't want to fry the board) and it worked great! Thanks again, and whenever this whole project is finished, I'll show some pics.

I believe on the SNES, the power doesn't go straight to the 7805 regulator, so bad things happened when I tried powering it staight into the DC jack....Sadly that no longer works (Yes, I know I must have done something stupid). On a happier note, connecting the power straight to the 7805 regulator still works, I'll just have to wire a switch to it, so no problem. Feel free to flame me for doing something stupid. :p

on the snes there is a black fuse hanging over an empty space of board on the left rear side, jump that and you're all set :D
