I actually did use the same original controller PCB--
and the round dial in the center of the speakers is an antique analog meter from some wierd military application. It is probably circa 1960's.
I used it to show battery power left, but it's not as accurate as I thought it would be.
On some of the newer version 1's, the circuits are smaller, and the sound circuit has been condensed to two SM chips. The mainboard itself is more square with lots of empty ground strips, so I just cut them off. This made it into a V-shape.
A switching regulator also cut consumption for the slightly larger power draw.
