Who needs regulators!

Post by G-force »

Not this big bad wolf! Here is my plan of attack for my upcoming GM64.

I went to a garage sale this week and found a bunch of old cell phones, cheap too. As I was looking through I found one that had a 7.2V battery! And it was a Li-Ion! I bought it for 25 cents!!! :D Cell phone/Charger and all!

When I got home I opened it up and found that it had two li-ion cells in series. I figured that I splice into the first cell and run the 3.3V n64 line off that.

I was afraid that since it was 3.6V (4V when fully charged) might fry the N64. It didnt! The n64 ran perfect for a whole minute before I turned off the N64 (due to my brother bugging me to use the TV :x :P ).

I think that, even though the first cell will die before the second cell is empty, this might be even better than using a 3.3V regulator, since there is not a ton of energy being wasted as heat.
What do you think? Keep in mind, I am planning on using a non-led modded 5" screen.

So the only problem I foresee is I have no idea what the capacity of the battery is. no markings anywhere on the battery. I think the only way to know how long it will power the GM64 is to just test it. If it turns out to be too small for a N64, I will just use it for my next PS1P 8)

That's what I thought too, but then I went to the site for the cell phone. I found out that it has an extended life li-ion battery that you could buy for it. I'm not sure if that is what this battery is or not, but I hope it is.

Well I got the N64 to run off the battery for about an hour playing Goldeneye. keep in mind that is WITHOUT a screen. Oh well, that's what I get for 25 cents  If I had two of these that might work....

I would suggest modding the screen, you'll get almost no battery life if you don't, or you could just buy the 7.2v Ni-MH RC battery from RS. That thing could be modded the same way I'm sure. You'll have to build in your own center tap though.

yeah N64s aren't the kind of thing you can get good battery life with a small battery. what you should probably do is get a powerful battery for GM64 and use cell phone battery for psonep 8) . BTW my cousin stepped on his psone and broke the CD cover and he's not much of a hardware person so maybe he'll give it to me to fix and portablize :D

The 7.2V battery from RS was actually my first choice until I found this. I may just buy one off ebay....

And I promised my friend the battery if I didn't get a decent run time. I'm gonna use it to power his PS1P that I am building for him 8)
