How do I attach it? Hot glue? Epoxy? I was thinking of a piece that would float inside the light box and that the mylar/foil could be wrapped ALL THE WAY around and taped/glued. Anything like that?

There's another (although thin) piece of plastic that goes behind the light diffuser, just sandwhich it between there.

actually, that piece of plastic goes on TOP of the light diffuser...just place whatever material you're using to reflect the light under the light diffuser...that's what I did, at least

Ok, I will put the mylar/foil under the light-diffuser plastic and flatten it with the plastic. I am going to end up with a PSOne screen that is VERY heavily modded after the foil/mylar diffuser hack, removing the top 1/2" of the board and LED backlighting it.

Last I checked there was a sheet of thin styrene on the bottom

hmmm...that's wierd

...on all the psone screens I've opened up, it's always been the light diffuser, then 2 sheets of plastic...

The ones I've taken apart have been: case top - screen - two sheets of semi-transparent plastic - light diffuser (surrounded by ccfl tube) - thin sheet of styrene - case bottom, and the styrene wraps up over the ccfl tube. My guess is that we're just not getting what each other is saying

Here's another cheap source of shiny mylar, I use this occasionally to simulate chrome on models and prop replicas:
Pop-Tarts wrappers!

If you need something bigger (not for these screen mods, but maybe other projects), a few brands of potato chips and other junk foods are still packed in metallized mylar bags too, use the inside just like was mentioned previously in this thread re the balloons. The hard part is getting big pieces without creases, scratches or dimples in them (especially after washing off the potato chip grease).

Anyone have pics of a succesful aluminum or mylar mod yet? I'm leaning way towards doing this mod. I just got a PSOne screen today off eBay for $32 (dances around room). Soon as it gets here, I'm going at it. Now where did I put those Pop-Tarts?

I didn't bother with the reflector (of any sort), but through the hacking of my own PSone screen, I gained more knowledge of it. First of all, there is a big (and thick) piece of glass in the middle of the light box, if you could replace it with a mirror, you'd have a much better looking mod than if you did it with tin foil. Second, if you use bright enough LEDs, it doesn't matter if you use a reflector or not. Third, it doesn't seem to matter if you touch the diffuser plastics.

yeah i modded the light box so almost all light is directed back in and once my leds get here i will tell everybody how it looks

That big piece of glass in the middle of the light box is essential to diffusing light. It's actually a piece of plastic covered with tiny divets on one side. The divets are shaped so that any light going through from the side will be partially redirected out the front. It's the only reason a tube light going around the outer edges of the screen (or a couple of LEDs) can light up the entire thing. Unless you're going to fill that space with a solid light source, you're going to need the plastic in there.
