Yeah I heard about it from my cousin. He showed me a Zelda game that was on a cart that he said was originally on the disks from the Famicom.

I'm pretty sure that both The Adventurs of Link (Zelda 2) and Metroid were one the FDS. Not to mention the Real Super Mario Bros. 2 and Doki Doki Panic (which was made "mario-ish and released outside of japan as "Super Mario Bros. 2", then was later re-released in japan as "Super Mario USA").

Gimme a minute and I might be able to dig up a complete list of games.

Ah yeah, here we go. This looks to be pretty complete:

I wonder why Nintendo never thought to release any addons for the NES like with the Famicom. If I knew Japanese I sure would look into getting one of those disk drive though.

too bad in a few years the disks will be no good, but thanks to emulation we can see it again.
unless nintendo decides to port the FDS versions of the games to the GBA, I'll have to settle for emulation.
FDS games I want: castlevania1-whatever came out, SMB1 FDS, SMB2 fds, Metroid fds.
They all have better music and save features.

Yes The Original Zelda came out for the disk system. Then was released on a cart much later.
Dude, it's Duck Hunt.

It was because they found that the disks were extremely easy to pirate. Companies all over Asia were making fake disks. Plus, there was already a disk standard in Japan which was compatible enough to use, I believe. Anyway, since America was still recovering from the Crash and VERY jumpy about poorly-made games, Nintendo took it upon themselves to make sure no piratable technology existed in the US.

Not only is that why the FDS didn't make it over, but also why our NES carts have 72 pins and the Famicom has 60. The extra 12 pins are for a lockout chip that stops pirated games from working with the NES. That's what causes the NES to reset continuously when the contacts fail--there is no communication between the lockout chip on the NES deck and the key chip in the cartridge. That's right. The deck and cartridge system were completely redesigned for the Western market. There is an easy way around that, though. ^^

Remember that if you get an FDS, it needs a 60-pin Famicom to work, not a 72-pin NES. Try to get them both if you can.

Oh, and by the way, many NES/Famicom games don't really use much text anyway. Unless you are playing the Japanese version of one of the more text extensive games, like their version of River City Ransom, or Kyatto Ninden Teyandee maybe, it should still be worth getting.
Warranty-Voiding fun!
