Is it possible to use a laptop screen for a portable?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Is it possible to use a laptop screen for a portable?

Post by nemba »

Size issues aside, is this possible? I've heard from various people that laptop lcds take entirely different protocols to normal ones, which would be too hard or expensive to convert. Can anyone here verify this or the opposite?

EDIT: The exact screen I'm thinking of using is one from a Dell Inspiron 7000.

You need a lcd controller that would work with that lcd, and if the controller only accepts 60hz rgb you will need a scan increasing circuit and maybe even a chroma decoder.
All in all, if you can even find a suitable controller that is, it should cost you around $400 to use a laptop screen.

Seeing as you could probably by a 15hz lcd the same size as a laptop screen for that price, it's not really worth the price or the effort.

Ah, ok. Thanks for explaining that. Do you know anywhere I could buy a 13-15" 15hz lcd?

eBay, electronic stores, places that are having sales. Just google or ebay what your looking for. BTW a 15" screen is gona take up a lot of power and it WILL cost around $400. Are you sure you want to spent that kind of money? Id reccomend getting a PSone screen. There cheap (for what you're getting), big and compatible with most systems exept the atari 2600.

Go here: http://search.ebay.com/psone-screen_W0Q ... propertyZ1
You'll find a good screen there.

How come the PSOne screens aren't compatibile with the Atari 2600? Do they only output RF or something?

yes, but Ben has an A/V mod that works well with normal tvs but sometimes it doesn't like PSOne screens. Ben once said that he thought a video amp should fix it.

I'll be honest with you - I would have never guessed that.
