N64 Power - DO I need 12V and 3V?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

its hard to really look at it like that..... , but theoritcally yes, i mean, the more voltage you having going into a voltage regulator the less work it has to do, to a point of course, to overload a converter would be obviously bad..., but yes, i suppose so

*o*,

With your 7 AA's, did you just use an ordinary Car walkman power thing to get the 3V?

warrior_rocker, thanks for all your help. I agree with you that 12V is the best way to go. Looking back, it's actually so simple: 3 voltages needed, 12, 3 and 7.2. 10 AA's for the 12, Car convertor for the 3, and a 7808 for the 7.2. (I was just getting confused with what a 7808 and 7805 were, but now I know, it's blindingly obvious what the best way to do it is.

Thanks again.

i'm with chodges84 wondering how you exactly did it, because, lithium ion batteries that i've seen, are all 7.2 (my dads camera batteries, the wal mart one that was used on this site)
the reason i'm for using one of these is that you can charge while playing, and you don't have multiple sets of batteries to test, charge or replace

the reason i'm asking about how *o* used a 7.2v battery is because i already have a couple,

but how much playtime do you get off your gamecube battery?

well, i havent got the newest battery yet, but the last n64p console i used with a similar battery i could get about an hour, im hoping for more playtime this time, becuase i will be using better voltage converters, and a 12v screen

Can these 7800 reulators increase voltage, if so, you oculd run off a 7.2V battery with a 7812.

7.2V battery into screen
7.2V battery into N64 12V line in (since it has a 7805 inside anyway)
7.2V battery into 7812 into 12V DC Car Convertor into 3V line in on N64

Would that work, or not (which I suspect it won't, or else someone would have said before now)

umm, no the only thing they can do (from what i know at least), is step down...., unless im completely wrong, if so someone correct me, ive just never seen a 7812?, maybe i just doubt it

The 78xx series is a step-down series. If you google "7.2V-12V Step up", you will probably find some good step-ups.

they sell them at maplin (http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?Mod ... 9&DOY=15m5), although I'd guess they can only step down. Also they are only 1 Amp, and doesn't the 3V line need about 7.2V or something?

That last sentence made absolutly no sense. The 12V line needs 7.2V, because 78XXs take about 2V-2.2V over the output(IE: 5V). Those are still 78XXs, and they only step-down. What you need is a step-up transformer to go up to 12V.

yeah, Just re read it, I dunno what I was thinking about when i wrote that, I was too engroseed in William and Mary (british TV program(me)), and just worte anything.

Yeah, I thought afterwards a step up transformer would be needed.

and then that would be really bad to have a step up trans in there... id just go w/ 12v, really i dont see any advantage to running any other voltage
