N64 circuit

Post by Gamelver »

I've decided to use a different power circuit to power my next N64p. It doesn't use car adapters, like I've been doing, but uses 7805 voltage regulators and resistors. Here it is (I'm not great at drawing circuits, but you should get the idea. The thick lines are the positive and the thin ones are for ground) :

I'm using a 7.2v @ 3 Ah RC car battery for this circuit. I've already tested it so I'm sure it works.
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

so are you using the 1 ohm 10W resistor to lower the voltage from 5v, to around 3.3V?

yep, that's the idea. I was just playing Mario 64 and it seems to work fine. I also tried Donkey Kong and it worked too.

have you checked the actuall voltage with a multimeter?

Yeah, it comes out as 3.3, just like it should. Also, I forgot to add that it uses 2.2 amps ( ) of power. I'm using a 3 Ah battery so it should last about an hour and 20 minutes, I think. I could use 12 Nimh aa batteries with 6 in series wired in parallel with the other 6 which are also wired in series (so basically, 7.2v @ 4.2Ah) However, I tried it with 6 Nimh aa batteries and it only worked for a minute or so before it started to reset.
The RC car battery works well, though.

yeah it works pretty well :)......although I'm gonna test it with an N64 for a couple hours playing to make sure it works well :) (I've tested it for about 30 minutes, so I think it'll work all right :))

So I only need one resistor thats great. Now I need to find where I put those 7805s and resistors I dug out of the PSU. I second the stick, this should help Trition who's asked me about this and I only know a little about how it was set up. I'll have to see about getting the N64 runnong on batteries soon after the PSone/NOAC.

Since it uses two regulators instead of one, that should help prevent the regulator overheating problem like ben had right?

no, it will actually let the n64 pull enough current.
A single 1 amp regulator doesn't handle a draw of 1.5 amps very well :P
