Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Connector restoration technique

Post by |B| »

OK, so I finally opened my Super NES the impatient way with pens, fire, and a drill. (I actually drilled a hole right through the PCB, it's pretty funny).

However, my efforts were pretty much in vain. I have the newer REV 1 board on which the cartridge connector is soldered. I remember Ben writing something about bending the pins on the connector back on the old NES so that games work again. I searched the forums, but found nothing. Could someone explain how to go about bending in pins on a connector for a better connection?

Thank you

basically, you just want to use a pin or really small screwdriver to bend the pins inwards....do it on each pin (not too much, though!) and you're cartridges should work everytime :)!!!
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

Thank you very much! I will continue this next weekend. And then I hope i'm all done taking stuff apart and having a disaster each time.

I highly advise everyone to invest in the two gamebits. Melting pens can make you sick and drilling is messy.

Now to finish my paper for Wednesday, and to continue replacing the CR2032s in my cartridges.

You should also try cleaning the pins with a Q-Tip dipped in rubbing alchohol. If you still have bad connections, you can even put a small layer of solder on the pins.

Bending pins wears down your cartridges. Why do you even want to do it? The Super NES's connector is better made than the NES one. It just doesn't really wear out. If it really is messed up, you could desolder it and put in a new one.

Thanks for all your help.

Bad news: My Super NES is completely dead. I was not careful in the pin bending process and the system is FUBAR. This was a great system for me. It really sucks that there is a time when I have the inferior Genesis and not the great SNES. However, I'm gonna replace it ASAP. I'm shooting for the mini model on ebay, I have a feeling those will have a better connector, much like my top loading NES.

Just out of curiosity: Do the small, newer Super NES systems work better than the originals? (Sort of like how the Top Loading NES works better than the Original).

I know someone who has one, I'll see if he will sell it to me. If not, I may go for a Mini SNES on eBay.

I've heard that the Mini-SNES has socketed connectors, is that true?

The mini snes has a connector that is also soldered onto the board. i made my SNESP out of a mini snes. if i remember correctly i read that the first versions of the snes had a removeable connector like the N64.

Mini Snes is a lot smaller, and Genesis rocks!

OK, I got the damn thing today. At least I can play games, but it's got the disgusting piss-yellow discoloration on a large portion of the plastic.

But yeah, it's damn small.

Genesis is fun, but doesn't rock nearly as much as SNES.
