I looked around and I didn't see a thread anywhere here about this so I'm starting one. My brother in law gave me a ps3 to repair because it wasnt reading discs. Okay fair enough, we've heard it before. So I get the unit and the replacement lens only to find its the wrong lens. Furthermore, I noticed that the lens assembly does in fact move, but the motor wont spin up. So after researching on the internet, it appears that NO ONE has even bothered to figure out why. The two biggest and I believe incorrect answers are, "Replace the whole drive." and "Send it to Sony."
Obviously, I opened it. No sending it to Sony, who will no doubt charge the price of a new one. Replacing the whole drive is a viable, but expensive option. Has anyone tinkered with one? I have but for different reasons. I'm hoping the motor isn't dead and its just a bad connection or something.
Please no thread crapping or reiterating the first two answers I googled.
Yes, a PS3 not spinning a disc thread.

Well I would ensure the motor is plugged in, and no traces are broken (as they use brushless motors).
There should also be a limit switch. So if the laser deck assembly is not hitting it, then it will not know when to start the spin up sequence.

Is that the micro switch at the base of the cd motor? The one that the sliding lens assembly would smack into when powered on?

Yes. Near the spindle / CD motor...weaponepsilon wrote:Is that the micro switch at the base of the cd motor? The one that the sliding lens assembly would smack into when powered on?

Re: Yes, a PS3 not spinning a disc thread.
I tested it with a multimeter and it seems to be working. I'll check the traces...

Re: Yes, a PS3 not spinning a disc thread.
i've had this problem and it turned out the laser of the ps3 runs first and checks for a disk then continues on, but dont quote me on this i fixed this problem a year ago.
I had to replace the laser part of the drive.
EDIT: also what kind do you need, i have a old 60gb release model laying around with CPU problems, would be willing to sell if WTB.
