It is not worth buying these days, unless you really want a paper reference. There is better, more up to date information on this forum, and the book has some serious errors in some of the projects, ones that will result in non-working portables.

Correct. I would just browse the console list on the forums and pick one to do. I would start off with a NES or SNES just to get your feet wet then branch out after that.
