Question about custom paint jobs.

I had a question on giving my NES a new paint job. I want to paint the top of my NES (Original model) Red and Black, and leave the bottom grey. My question is: should I use a primer before painting it, or can I just paint it as is? Also, is spray paint alright, or should I use a different kind of paint? Thanks in advance.
