VU mic circuit problems

Hi all- I'm trying to make a VU meter that reads sound levels from a electret mic but can't seem to get the circuit to work. I'm using a S1A2284A 5-dot LED IC and an electret mic. I tried the circuit suggested by the manufacturer and connected the mic up for the signal- no results, tried hooking the mic up to a basic mic amplifier then to same said circuit- no results. Getting frustrated...grrrr! Any help would be appreciated.
