When sony made the psp 1000 what was the actual intention for the IR port?

I know that i can use it for a remote control but what was sony's intention?

I don't know if it had a stated use - it might have just been there for developers to use if they wanted. Can't cost much to include it. Probably only did away with it because nobody was using it (officially).
