DIY Dolby Home Theatre Souround System?

Post by Haunted360 »

Hey,

Would anyone have any ideas on how to build you own or even find a cheep 5.1 'box' to input audio and output it to the correct channels?

So simply, (I think these are the correct prefixes and setups. 5 speakers, 1 sub.)

FL (Front Left) 1
FR (Front Right) 2
RL (Rear Left) 3
RR (Rear Right) 4
M (Middle) 5
.
SUB (Subwoofer) 1

Because I am playing Resident Evil 4 on the Gamcube (Original Port and has better graphics over the PS2 version which I wasted passing as I got the infinite rocket launcher on it *sigh*) and the audio is some what boring now. I was then thinking, I have the speakers (5.1) but only a DVD player that came with it that only OUTPUTS the audio from the DVD itself.

Any ideas on solving this?

I dont want to spend over $70 or even $1300 on a Dolby pro logic system / box hahahahahahaha

Thanks

I got my Pioneer Dolby Digital receiver for $15 at a garage sale. If you live anywhere even remotely cold (I'd assume Australia gets cold :P ) there won't be any garage sales this time of year. Do you have any second-hand stores/pawn shops near you? I know Goodwill here in the US often has second-hand stereo receivers for under $20, and most of the time people are just dumping them because they don't have HDMI.

Fight MS Paint abominations! If you don't have a camera, go here, and pick something 3 megapixels or higher.

Haha, yea Australia gets cold. Not now though, its summer however .

Great idea though. I'll check out something called Cash Converters. Stands for its name. Trade your stuff, Games, Consoles, TV's etc for Cash. Not as good as eBay though

Thanks man.

At a place called "XS Cargo" here in canada, you can get a refurbished Coby 5.1 Digital Surround Sound with Dolby Digital for like $50.

Get lucky. Scour craigslist, freecycle, thrift stores and free ads. I got mine for repairing someones receiver and they gave me a Pioneer they had laying around. Now to get some speakers...

does it have to be dolby digital, or just anything that supports dolby surround sound (eg pro logic II etc) does it need coaxial or optical input? typically you can find old prologic II surround sound receivers for pretty cheap, check surplus stores, thrift shops, pawn shops etc. any home theater in a box should be adequate for your needs.
