Hello, and help me out

Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.

Hello, and help me out

Post by WarZombie »

So I'm new to building and modding and the like, and I guess the best way to go about this is just to ask:

I have a spare Gamecube case I want to empty out and turn into a small PC. Now, I have no experience doing this sort of thing, but it seems like an interesting project to take on in my spare time. What parts would I need to make this happen, and what would be the best way to go about building the damned thing when I get started? Thanks for taking the time to read this post, and I'd like to say hello and hopefully the experience gained from this could assist in further mods :)

Welcome!

You would need to buy a really small motherboard to get it to fit. That's not impossible, but it's not cheap.
This website should have the info you need: http://www.mini-itx.com/store/
You would need the motherboard (pico-ITX size in all likelihood), some RAM, a power supply (the picopsu is probably your best bet), and a hard drive (2.5" laptop-size is your best bet). It wouldn't be a difficult project.

When making PCs out of leftover consoles, most people prefer the NES because it's big enough that you can use a Mini-ITX size board. Mini-ITX-size motherboards are typically significantly cheaper and do more than the Pico-ITX boards.

Fight MS Paint abominations! If you don't have a camera, go here, and pick something 3 megapixels or higher.

Thanks for the reply. So all in all, what specifically are we looking at here? DVD drives, other connections, etc. What parts would I need to get started? Materials list? I'm not experienced, but I know how to assemble, i figure it might not be that much different on a smaller scale.
